Start with the opening and structure
The opening needs to be correctly formed, level and suitable for the doors being installed. Where structural work is involved, that needs to be resolved as part of the project rather than treating the bifold as an isolated product.
Plan the panel configuration
Think about which direction the doors stack, how often you want a single access leaf, where furniture sits and how people move between the house and garden. The best-looking configuration on paper is not always the most practical one in daily use.
Why aluminium is popular for bifolds
Aluminium is widely chosen for bifold systems because it can create a crisp, contemporary appearance and is well suited to larger glazed openings. The exact frame, panel sizes and performance still need to be selected for the individual project.
Threshold and drainage planning
A low-looking transition is desirable on many extensions, but internal floor levels, external paving and drainage all need consideration. Do not decide the threshold in isolation from the building around it.
Before requesting a bifold quote
Send the approximate opening size, photographs inside and outside, your Essex postcode, preferred colour and an idea of how many panels you want. Mention whether the opening already exists or whether building work is required. That makes the first conversation much more useful.
Warning signs and safety advice
Arrange a professional inspection if you notice any of the following:
A door scraping, dropping or no longer locking smoothly.
Loose hinges, damaged glass, cracked panels or movement in the frame.
Security hardware that feels unreliable or requires excessive force.
If any glass, roof panel or external component appears loose or displaced, keep people away from the area beneath it and do not attempt to force it back into position. Seek professional advice promptly.
