Why Your New Windows Need a Contract, Not a Handshake
New windows and doors are one of the biggest investments you'll make in your home. Yet most people hand that job over on a quote, a handshake and a promise. Here's why that's the wrong way round, and what a properly run installation looks like.
Why window installations go wrong for busy homeowners
If you run a business, you'd never take on a supplier without a contract, a clear scope and a paper trail. You know what happens when expectations aren't written down: dates slip, corners get cut, and when something goes wrong nobody can agree what was promised.
Home improvements are no different. The problems people tell us about with past installers are almost never about the product itself. They're about the fit and the follow-through.
Fitters who turn up late, or not at all, with no word
Frames that weren't packed or sealed properly, leading to draughts and condensation
Bifold and patio doors that need adjusting again and again
Old frames and rubbish left on the drive
No certificate, no clear guarantee, and no one answering the phone when you need them
A window is only as good as the person who fits it. The frame might come from the same manufacturer either way. The difference is the installer, and the system they work to.
How a properly run window and door installation works
At Eco Windows and Doors Essex every job follows the same system, start to finish. Here's exactly what happens.
Survey: your property is measured by a surveyor who holds a FENSA Skills Card. The person who measures it answers for it.
Contract: you receive a 10-page contract in paper and digital form, setting out exactly what's being fitted, when, and what's included.
Pre-installation flyer: before the day, you know what to expect, how to prepare, and who's coming.
Install day: we arrive between 8 and 9am. Dust sheets go down, old frames come out, new frames go in square, packed and sealed correctly.
Clean-up: all waste is removed from site. Your home is left tidy.
Certification: your installation is registered with FENSA, so you get a certificate showing it meets Building Regulations. You'll need it when you sell.
Guarantee: your work is covered by an insurance-backed guarantee.
Live digital folder: your contract, certificate, guarantee and aftercare manual are kept in one place. When a buyer, agent or tenant asks for paperwork, you send a link.
Bifold doors deserve a special mention. Many people believe they always need adjusting after a few months. They don't. Badly fitted ones do. Get the threshold level, the opening square and the packing right, and the door stays right. Done right first time, it's done.
That's the standard on every job, whether it's a single porch, a full house of windows or a set of bifolds.
So stop for a moment.
Think about the last time a tradesperson let you down. What did it cost you in time, stress and money to put right?
What if you choose the cheapest window quote instead?
Sometimes the cheapest quote works out. Often it doesn't. When it goes wrong, you pay twice: once for the job, and again for someone to fix it. Without a written contract you have little to fall back on. Without a FENSA certificate you may face questions when you come to sell. And without a proper guarantee, any problem down the line is yours to deal with.
The cheapest window is the one you never have to think about again.
